How did Lemuria become a spiritual homeland?

Helena Blavatsky, the founder of Theosophy, took the idea in a new direction. In The Secret Doctrine (1888), she described Lemuria as the home of a “third root race” of early, spiritually advanced proto-humans. In her account, Lemuria came before Atlantis.

Later writers linked Lemuria with Mu, another imagined lost land. James Churchward placed Mu in the Pacific and treated it as the same place.
